One of the orbital welcome signs.

These illuminated signs orbit the planet Boink, welcoming visitors and warning them of the planet's clothing optional state.

There are six signs in all, positioned in geostationary orbits around the planet: above the north pole, above the south pole, and the other four in a ring around the planet's equator. This insures that no matter the direction one approaches the planet from, at least one of these signs will be visible.

Onboard Equipment

Apart from the signs themselves, and the lights used to illuminate them, each sign is equipped with four position-tracking sensors and a small drive unit which maintain the sign's attitude and rotation, as well as monitoring the sign's elevation above the surface of the world.

The signs also function as navigational marker buoys, traffic sensors, and communication relays.

When a ship comes into range of the planet, an onboard communications unit will broadcast an automatic greeting message and direct the incoming craft to one of the planet's orbital platforms. This message will vary depending on which of the signs is closest, and will direct the ship to whichever of the orbital platforms is the most convenient.
